Aladdin And The Whompy Wheels: Mena Massoud Sues After Brand New Tesla Crashes Itself Into A Tree

The fact that electric cars are now commercially available sounds like a wish come true, and in some ways it is.  Electric cars do not fill the air with smog, nor do they deplete the world’s petroleum resources.  It would be enough if electric cars were simply good for the environment but unassuming to look at, like solar energy panels on the roof of a house.  In fact, they have become a status symbol; the only thing that makes you look cooler than charging your phone in public is charging your electric car.  They are expensive enough to be an aspirational product; you may be able to afford a Tesla one day, albeit a less expensive model than the one your favorite celebrity bought.  The trouble is that Tesla electric vehicles are not as good at being cars as they are at looking good in Instagram photos.  In fact, they are so plagued with problems that plaintiffs in product liability lawsuits against Tesla, including at least one celebrity, claim that Tesla should have issued safety recalls, like normal car manufacturers do.  If a defective vehicle bears the lion’s share of the fault for the car accident that caused your injuries, contact a Jacksonville defective product lawyer.

Be Careful What You Wish For

In September 2018, Mena Massoud was on top of the world.  Not only had he just finished filming the live action Disney Aladdin movie, where he played the title role, but he had bought a new Tesla Model 3.  The day after he bought the car, he went for a drive on Hollywood Boulevard in South Florida; as every Floridian knows, Hollywood Boulevard in September is one of the most beautiful places on Earth.  All of a sudden, one of the front wheels of the car spontaneously detached, causing the car to crash into a tree.

Massoud made a full recovery from the injuries he suffered in the crash, but the experience was frightening enough for him to take Tesla to task about its cars’ safety issues.  Massoud alleges negligence on the part of Tesla that it did not issue a safety recall when so many drivers had complained of suspension problems, and this was not the first Tesla to have a wheel spontaneously detach.  The car journalism world even had a term for it: whompy wheels.

Massoud’s terrifying encounter with Tesla was far from the worst-case scenario.  Several Floridians have died in crashes caused by or made worse by poorly designed features of Tesla’s electric vehicles.  These have also resulted in product liability lawsuits.
